This historic Florentine restaurant opened in around 1870 and got its name from the fact that the carriages of the time “parked” in the square in front of it. The trattoria’s name was changed to “Nandina” after World War II and, for over thirty years, was one of the most popular eating-places in Florence.
Its management has recently been taken over by Filippo Cati, a highly professional caterer, and his wife Pasqualina Manfredi who oversees the kitchen. Completely restructured, the restaurant is delightful for its classical yet at the same time modern elegance, its pleasant lighting and its typical though revisited cuisine that offers both meat and fish dishes; excellent value for money, it is always open from 11 in the morning until 11 at night, without any afternoon closure.
Start off with “Nandina”, the appetizer of the house, which changes every day and includes at least seven different “nibbles”, or with the excellent Bufala 250, a whole buffalo mozzarella accompanied by baby onions and tomatoes. Follow this up with one of the first courses, like the octopus salad with crisp vegetables, the tagliatelle Antiche Carrozze style, the rocket stuffed tortelloni with a white cream and walnut truffle sauce, the foil-baked seafood linguine, spaghetti with fresh baby clams or the seafood risotto with baby octopus, squid, tattlers and giant prawns. The meat dishes highlight the second courses composed of barbequed ribs of lamb, Brunello di Montalcino style fillet of steak and sliced fillet of steak, though the fish platters are also worth trying from the mixed grill, the grilled swordfish steak with potatoes or the foil-cooked Tyrrhenian sea bass.
The venue is also a pizzeria of excellent quality and serves light, easily digested pizzas. The desserts are all homemade. The glass can taste over seven wines every evening.
